No Surprise! Barack Obama Voted America’s ‘Most Admired Man’

By Nicole Hyatt, Eurweb.com

Barack Obama may no longer be president, but for the 10th year in a row he’s still the “most admired man” in America, according to new survey data from Gallup.

The annual poll, taken every year but one since 1946, asks respondents to name their most admired man and woman, as well as their second choice.

Obama topped the competition with 17 percent of the vote. Donald Trump followed with 14 percent. After Trump was Pope Francis (3 percent) and the Rev. Billy Graham (2 percent), with several other political, spiritual and business leaders being named, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and the Dalai Lama.

Musk and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos appeared on the list for the first time.

On the women’s side, Hillary Clinton was named the most admired for the 16th year in a row, with 9 percent of mentions. The former secretary of State and presidential candidate has been named most admired more than any other man or woman in polling history, according to Gallup, who notes that her 2017 polling numbers were the lowest in the past 15 years, making it unlikely for her to hold …read more

Descendant Confronts Slave Ancestor’s Memory In Enrolling At Georgetown University

By Clarissa Hamlin

One woman is confronting a painful past at Georgetown University, where her slave ancestors were sold more than 145 years ago. Mélisande Short-Colomb, 63, a descendant of one of 272 slaves were sold for profit to bail Georgetown out of a financial crisis in 1838, has enrolled at the school, The Washington Post reported. Colomb, a retired chef, said the decision to become a college freshman at the university was a good one.

“It feels right,” Short-Colomb, moving onto campus 45 years after she first enrolled in college, said. “I want to go back to the source of my family in America.”

As reparations go, this is up there:

Judge Tells NYPD There’s No Good Reason To Hide Police Misconduct Files

By Nigel Roberts

A New York City judge ordered the NYPD to release documents related to the fatal police shooting of Ramarley Graham in 2012, The New York Daily News reported. This lack of transparency fits a national pattern of shielding police misconduct.

The city’s ongoing delay in sharing the involved officers’ records “creates a semblance of using civil rights law…inappropriately as a shield to protect the NYPD from embarrassment,” Justice Manuel Mendez stated. He also criticized the department for using internal investigations of the officers as an excuse for arguing that Graham’s mother, Constance Malcolm, is not entitled to see the Civilian Complaint Review Board records.

Heartbreaking. Unacceptable. Almost 6 yrs since NYPD killed #RamarleyGraham in front of gma & 6yo brother.

NYC/NYPD *still* fighting release of related info & hasn’t scheduled admin trials of 2 charged cops

Here’s What Happens When Police Taser Abuse Goes Unchecked

By Nigel Roberts

A former Michigan State Police trooper receive only minor punishment for improper Taser use before he fired his stun gun and caused 15-year-old Damon Grimes to fatally crash his ATV, the Detroit Free Press reported. The Police misuse of Tasers is common but largely overshadowed by gun shootings.

An arbitrator blocked the state police department’s attempt to punish the ex-trooper, Mark Bessner, with a 10-day suspension for firing his stun gun twice at a fleeing handcuffed suspect. Instead, Bessner received a one-day suspension and a slap on the wrist, according to an Associated Press investigation.

Prosecutors charged Bessner with second-degree murder for Grimes’ Aug. 26 death. He recklessly fired a Taser from his moving patrol car in pursuit of the teen who was trying to escape a citation. Firing from a moving vehicle violated the department’s policy. In the earlier 2014 incident, Bessner was involved in the arrest of a man during a traffic stop in Detroit. Cameroon Frees US Professor Held For Criticizing Government

By Joel Kouam, Associated Press

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) — A New York literature professor held in the Central African nation of Cameroon since early this month for criticizing the government was released Wednesday, his lawyer said.

Dual U.S. and Cameroonian citizen Patrice Nganang waited to be expelled to an unknown destination, lawyer Emmanuel Simh said, adding that the professor has been told not to return.

Nganang, a professor at New York’s Stony Brook University, had faced a Jan. 19 hearing after being detained Dec. 7 while trying to leave his native country. The court in Yaounde early Wednesday announced he was released and that all charges were dropped.

37-year-old had written an article for Jeune Afrique that was critical of how Cameroon’s government has handled a sometimes violent secessionist movement in some English-speaking areas. The country’s English-speaking minority has complained about discrimination by French speakers.

Human rights groups, which have accused Cameroon authorities of trying to silence opposition voices, had urged Nganang’s release.

The charges against him included issuing a death threat; insulting constitutional bodies, specifically the military; and inciting violence in a Facebook post, according to supporters including the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.

By Nigel Roberts

The Rev. James Blakely, a 97-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, is battling a nonprofit veterans organization to stay in a Brooklyn apartment that he believes was given to him rent free five years ago, the New York Daily News reported.

“They’re trying to put me out. It’s injustice. I don’t know what’s going to happen. … I don’t feel good. I got no place else to go,” said the decorated Pearl Harbor survivor.

Five years ago, journalist Denis Hamill discovered Blakely living in a junkyard trailer with no running water. Arrangements were made days later for him to move into a studio apartment through Black Veterans for Social Justice, a nonprofit that helps vets obtain their military benefits and social services. Blakely’s understanding was that the living space was free. All was well until he received an eviction notice last year that said he owed $24,130 in back rent.

“When we first put Rev. Blakely into that apartment in 2012 and furnished it for him, it was a one-year rent-free lease. After that, Mr. …read more

DOJ Rescinds Guidance Against Excessive Court Fines To Poor People

By Nigel Roberts

Attorney General Jeff Sessions revoked 25 Justice Department guidance documents on a range of federal laws, including one from President Barack Obama‘s DOJ that called on courts to stop trapping poor people in cycles of fines, debt and jail, The New York Times reported.

“Any guidance that is outdated, used to circumvent the regulatory process or that improperly goes beyond what is provided for in statutes or regulation should not be given effect,” Sessions stated as his reason for the move.

Municipalities came under scrutiny during the Obama administration for conspiring to target Black drivers who are too poor to pay their traffic fines and court fees. When they can’t pay, the courts add more fines on top of the original. That debt allows cities to confiscate wages or property.
