By AP

CHICAGO (AP) — Former President Barack Obama has delivered opening remarks at a Chicago leadership summit hosted by his foundation for hundreds of civic leaders and artists from around the world.

Obama calls the two-day event starting Tuesday a “collective conversation” to exchange ideas with young people and help spark change.

He says a goal is to address civic culture, not create a political movement. Obama didn’t discuss politics aside from saying, “What’s wrong with our politics is a reflection of something wrong in our civic culture.”

Other summit guests include Prince Harry. He and former first lady Michelle Obama on Tuesday visited a Chicago high school near the site of Barack Obama’s lanned presidential center.

Baltimore Students & Alumni Under Fire For ‘Freddie Gray’ Costumes

By Eurweb.com

Students and alumni of several Baltimore-area schools have sparked outrage over their choice of racially charged Halloween costumes, including one of Freddie Gray, the African American man who was placed in the back of a police transport van during what a state prosecutor later deemed was an illegal arrest.

Gray died from a serious spinal injury, sparking protests across Baltimore and beyond.

Several photos appeared on social media, including one that showed a graduate from the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland wearing an orange jumpsuit with “Freddie Gray” written on his back, the Baltimore Sun reported. The photo was taken at an off-campus party at the College of Charleston in South Carolina, according to President Glenn McConnell, who said the incident is now under investigation.

Another social media photo showed students from the Gilman School and Roland Park Country School posing in orange jumpsuits, with a Snapchat caption that read, “N—-s broke out,” CBS reported. A third photo showed a St. Paul’s School student with a swastika and racial slur scrawled on his bare back.

Former Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, whose daughter attends Roland Park, took to Facebook with her frustration, writing: “Heartbroken. Disappointed. Frustrated.”

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Authorities say a woman accused of pepper-spraying patrons at a Chuck E. Cheese’s in Louisiana has been arrested.

Nola.com/The Times-Picayune reports a deputy working a security detail was at the front of the Metairie Chuck E. Cheese’s restaurant on Sunday when someone notified him about an argument that was getting out of hand. The deputy spotted the woman “indiscriminately spraying pepper spray.”

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Jason Rivarde says paramedics treated five adults and two children for exposure at the scene.

Police arrested 24-year-old Katarian Marshall and charged her with disturbing the peace by fighting. It’s unclear if she has a lawyer.

Trump Chief Of Staff Kelly Decries Removal Of Monuments

By Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — White House chief of staff John Kelly says Confederate General Robert E. Lee was “an honorable man” and applying current thinking on social issues to figures in history is “very, very dangerous.”

Kelly also said in an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham that aired Monday night that the removal of monuments to the Confederacy shows “a lack of appreciation of history.” The retired Marine Corps general was responding to a question about a

Virginia church’s decision to remove historical markers for Lee and George Washington.

Kelly said the Civil War was sparked by “the lack of the ability to compromise.”

Disciplinary Case Continues For Van Driver In Freddie Gray Murder

By Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — A police disciplinary board is hearing the case of a Baltimore police van driver acquitted of murder last year in the death of Freddie Gray, a young black man whose neck snapped during his trip to the station.

The hearing of Officer Caesar Goodson’s case enters its second day on Tuesday with Goodson’s defense attorney, Sean Malone, scheduled to ask questions of an internal police investigator.

Attorney Neil Duke, representing the police department, says Goodson should be fired for failing to secure the handcuffed and shackled inmate with a safety belt inside the van. The 25-year-old Gray died a week later from spinal cord injuries he suffered while being transported.

Kenneka Jenkins’ Mother Claims Police Lied About Video Footage

Teen from Chicago found dead in walk-in freezer at hotel

Source: Chicago Tribune / Getty

Kenneka Jenkins’ mother, Tereasa Martin, is convinced that authorities are covering up evidence in her daughter’s death.

Looking at information authorities collected about Kenneka’s death has only raised more question for Tereasa. Newsweek reports that Tereasa believes that Chicago police did a poor job in their investigation.

“I believe that it’s a cover up,” she told 107.5 WGCI last week. “I’m still looking for answers.”

According to cops, Kenneka died of hypothermia and exposure after drunkenly wandering into a walk-in freezer at the Crown Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois.

An autopsy has turned up no evidence of sexual assault, but Tereasa wants authorities to perform another autopsy. Furthermore, police say that there is no evidence of any foul play leading up to Kenneka’s death.

Although there is security footage of Kenneka walking through the halls of the hotel by herself, there is no video of her actually walking into the freezer on her own. Cops say that’s because there aren’t any cameras near the freezer door, but this is where Tereasa has a huge problem with their findings.

According to Newsweek, Kenneka’s mother found a camera right above the freezer. When she asked authorities about seeing …read more

Grandmother Confronts Teen Who Body-Slammed Her At Pool Party

By Ny Magee, Eurweb.com

68-year-old Nancy James came face-to-face in a courtroom with the teenager who body-slammed her at a pool party after she asked his friends to lower their music.

The grandmother approached the teens at a pool party near her house in North Lauderdale, Fl., in May. Inside Edition reports that the shocking footage showed her being body-slammed by a then-16-year-old, dragged, and thrown into the pool. Prior to the incident, James had undergone hip and heart procedures.

“What he did was a very cruel thing. Very cruel. Very inhuman,” she told the court, before addressing him directly. “You have so much ahead of you. You’re a young kid. You’ve got college. You got hopes. You got dreams, and you know what, unfortunately, this will follow you, forever.”

Judge Elijah Williams agreed.

“For the rest of his life when they Google his name, that video is going to pop up, so essentially, he’s a dead man walking,” the judge said.

Leon’s mother, Shekita Johnson, said: “I just want to apologize to you for what my son did. I didn’t raise my child that way.

The teenager also had words for James.

“I mean this from the bottom of my heart that I had no intention of inflicting …read more
