Baltimore’s 2017 Murder Rate Surpasses 100 Before End Of April

By Nigel Roberts

Baltimore officials recorded the 101st homicide this year on Monday, marking the first time since 1998 that the city reached that grim milestone before the end of April, ABC News reports.

The 2017 murder rate is 34 percent higher than the same time last year, according the Baltimore Sun.

“We have to engage this community or it’s going to continue to be a bloodbath, the Rev. Donte Hickman, pastor of the Southern Baptist Church, told the Sun.

A surge of violence began after the 2015 death of Freddie Gray in police custody, which sparked riots in the city.

“We’re continuing to do everything we can to impact that number so it doesn’t continue to grow,” a Baltimore Police Department spokesman told The Sun.

Florida Principal Transferred After Requesting That White Students Remain Together

By Tonya Pendleton, BlackAmericaWeb.com

A Florida principal has been transferred after she admitted to asking teachers to keep white students together in a predominantly Black elementary school. Principal Christine Hoffman said that the request would keep the white students ‘more comfortable.”

Her school, Campbell Park Elementary in St. Petersburg Florida, has 49 white students out of 66 students overall. As you might imagine, her directive did not go down well with the school’s Black parents.

The DailyMail reports:

At a meeting with parents on Monday, she tried to defend the remark, telling families: ‘I was not asking that all white students in each grade be clustered, as that is not our practice in creating class lists.

‘I understand how racially insensitive the guideline was.’

Parents however said they would not be satisfied until Hoffman was fired.

‘The parents said that as black people we are used to being the only black person in the classroom and no one is making sure we are comfortable,’ Denise Ford told The Tampa Bay Times after the meeting.

‘The parents were not accepting of any excuse. We accept your apology, but you have to go,’ she added.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Hoffman requested the transfer to …read more

Report: Black Fox News Employees Forced To Arm Wrestle With White Female Colleagues

By Clarissa Hamlin

Seven African-American employees at Fox News will join in on a pending racial discrimination lawsuit against the controversial network, with newly revealed claims flying about colleagues being forced to arm wrestle one another, reports New York Magazine:

From New York Magazine:

Next week, according to sources, seven black Fox News employees plan to join a racial-discrimination suit filed last month by two colleagues. The original lawsuit alleged that Fox News’ longtime comptroller, Judy Slater [who was fired in February] subjected members of Fox’s payroll staff to racial insults for years…

Lawyers representing the payroll employees are demanding that Fox’s accounting director, Tammy Efinger, also be removed from supervising an employee because she allegedly participated in Slater’s racist behavior…

The letter [from the employees’ lawyers to the network’s lawyers obtained by New York Magazine] also includes new allegations of racism in Fox News’ accounting department. According to the plaintiffs’ attorneys, Slater demanded that black female employees hold “arm wrestling matches’” with white female employees in her office, just down the hall from Ailes’s office on the second floor of Fox headquarters.

California Man Files Lawsuit After Police Beating

By The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A black man hurled to the ground and punched repeatedly in the face by a police officer this month has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and county of Sacramento, claiming Monday he was targeted because of his race and abused in jail after his arrest.

The lawsuit seeking unspecified monetary damages for Nandi Cain, who police said was jaywalking, also named the officer as a plaintiff and identified him as Anthony Figueroa, said Cain’s lawyer, John Burris.

Cain told reporters that his memory of the event is blurry because he suffered a concussion and could barely see because of a black eye and that his nose was broken.

Burris said Cain was guilty mainly of “walking while black” and that the incident reminded him of the videotaped beating of black motorist Rodney King in Los Angeles. Four white police officers were acquitted in King’s beating 25 years ago, sparking days of deadly rioting.

Police who had criticized the officer’s actions during the widely publicized April 10 event captured on video had not identified him, saying only that the officer was a two-year member of the force placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Luckey Jr. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and teammates and the entire LWC community during this incredibly difficult time.”

Her track and field coach remembered how Smith would light up the room with her personality. “Mercedes was a good-spirited person who showed promise in her future,” said Gordon. “She was a fun and loving person and everyone enjoyed being around her. She will be truly missed.”

By Nigel Roberts

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) Holds Town Hall Meeting In Los Angeles

Constituents have roughed up Republicans, and even some Democrats, at recent town hall meetings. But that’s not the case for California’s freshman senator.

The Sacramento Bee reports that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) received lots of cheers Friday at her first town hall meeting. Harris’ constituents are pleased with her tough stance against the Trump administration and with her voting record.

It’s always great to be home, thank you to everyone who joined me Friday at my town hall! https://t.co/916js8QIco

“We are not going to buy into this administration’s fear mongering and vilifying whole communities of people,” Harris told the crowd. “I’ve personally prosecuted everything from low level offenses to homicides. I …read more

New Orleans Takes Down 1st Of 4 Confederate Statues

By Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Workers in New Orleans removed the first of four prominent Confederate monuments Monday morning, making the city the latest Southern institution to sever itself from symbols viewed by many as a representation of racism and white supremacy.

The Liberty Place monument, which commemorates whites who tried to topple a biracial post-Civil War government in New Orleans, was taken away on a truck in pieces around 5:35 a.m. after a few hours of work.

At a news conference hours after the statue was dismantled, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu vowed that “we will no longer allow the Confederacy to literally be put on a pedestal in the heart of our city.”

The removal happened early in the morning in an attempt to avoid disruption from supporters who want the monuments to stay, some of whom city officials said have made death threats.

Workers who took the monument down Monday could be seen wearing bulletproof vests, military-style helmets and scarves that obscured their faces. Police were also on hand, including officers who watched the area from atop the parking garage of a nearby hotel.

“The statue was put up to honor the killing of police officers by white supremacists,” Landrieu said at Monday’s …read more

Florida State Senator Resigns After Racist Rant

By NewsOne Staff

Florida State Senator Frank Artiles resigned Friday after he went on a racist rant referring to colleagues as the N-word, reports The Huffington Post.

From The Huffington Post:

Artiles was at a members-only club in Tallahassee on Monday when he went on a profanity-laden tirade. Speaking with fellow state Sens. Audrey Gibson (D) and Perry Thurston (D), who are both black, Artiles reportedly said that “six n****rs” had helped get Senate President Joe Negron (R) elected. Negron is white.

The senators present for Artiles’ tirade said he also referred to Gibson as “this bitch” and called Negron a “pussy.” …He had previously apologized for his language, but it wasn’t enough to stop the backlash. Protesters rallied at Artiles’ empty district office on Thursday, demanding that he step down. “What state senator or what elected official goes up there, uses the ‘n-word,’ calls people ‘bitches’?” protester Deltravis Williams told CBS Miami. “He got a record of this. It ain’t like he just started this. He’s been doing this for years.”

Negron forced Artiles to apologize on the Senate floor Wednesday, with Black lawmakers and Twitter users disgusted with the senator, reports the <a class="colorbox" href="http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/article145942934.html" …read more
