D.C. Case Highlights Some Misconceptions About Missing African Americans

By Jeff Mays

Although African Americans make up just 13 percent of the U.S. population, we account for 37 percent of the missing in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s database under the age of 18 and 26 percent above the age of 18. Cases involving African Americans also tend to receive less media coverage than missing Whites, with missing men of color getting even less attention.

NewsOne has partnered with the Black and Missing Foundation to focus on the crisis of missing African Americans.

To be a part of the solution, NewsOne will profile missing persons and provide tips about how to keep your loved ones safe and what to do if someone goes missing.

When Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department began using social media to send alerts about critical missing persons cases. Many of the people featured on the agency’s Twitter feed were young Black women. The Internet noticed and the news went viral.

An Instagram post announcing that 14 black girls went missing in D.C. within a 24-hour period sent people into a tizzy. Celebrities such as Taraji P. Henson, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, LL Cool J and Gabrielle Union began posting about the missing Black …read more

WATCH: Angela Rye Shuts Down Joe Walsh With ‘I’m Not Talking To Bigots’

By Clarissa Hamlin

Democratic consultant and political commentator Angela Rye let loose about her thoughts on former Rep. Joe Walsh doubling down on his claim that the bar was lowered for Barack Obama because of his Blackness by calling him a “bigot” during a CNN segment this week, reports CNN .

From CNN:

On “CNN Tonight” Monday evening, during a conversation about the standards for President Donald Trump, Rye commented that President Barack Obama “had to be the next best thing to Jesus.”
After watching Rye’s remarks, Walsh used his Twitter account to offer a very different view. “We LOWERED the bar for Obama,” Walsh, now a conservative radio talk show host, tweeted. “He was held to a lower standard cuz he was black.”
It was a position Rye took issue with — as she explained to Baldwin and her viewers. “You all decided to give Joe Walsh a platform today, I’m not giving him the time of day,” she said. “I’m not interested in trying to convince and change the mind of a bigot, someone who will openly troll me and say things that are offensive, that he knows are not true.”
Walsh tried to response …read more

By Kellee Terrell

Rep. Maxine Waters may have had nothing to say to Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly about his recent racist and sexist comments about her, but she definitely had a lot to say when she was on MSNBC on Tuesday night.

And she didn’t hold back.

“I am a strong black woman, and I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be undermined,” Waters told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.

“I cannot be thought to be afraid of Bill O’Reilly or anybody. And I’d like to say to women out there everywhere: Don’t allow these right-wing talking heads, these dishonorable people, to intimidate you or scare you. Be who you are. Do what you do. And let us get on with discussing the real issues of this country.”She also made sure to stress how O’Reilly and former Fox News head Roger Ailes has a history of ill-treatment toward women and have “no credibility.”

“They have been sued by women. They have had to pay millions of dollars in fines for harassment and other kinds of things. And so we know about that checkered past. And we also know that when a woman stands up and speaks truth to power that there …read more

Oneal Morris has an infamous reputation as the “toxic tush doctor.” This came after reports she allegedly injected women’s buttocks with tire sealant and cement. Now, Morris is facing time for a fatal incident.

Starting in 2007, Morris, who is transgender, injected Shatarka Nuby’s with “silicone” so that her butt could get bigger. A few years later, Nuby died and the medical examiner said it was because of a “massive systemic silicone migration” from injections into her buttocks and hips. Nuby’s aunt told police that she was present when Morris injected her niece. Morris told her the silicone was from Home Depot.

Spicer Plays Nice With April Ryan At Wednesday’s White House Press Briefing

By Charise Frazier

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer decided to change his tone at Wednesday’s press briefing after chiding veteran journalist April Ryan during a tense exchange regarding the Trump-Russia investigation.

Spicer opened the press conference by throwing to Ryan for the first question of the day.

— CBS News (@CBSNews) March 29, 2017

“April,” Spicer said.

“Why thank you Sean!” she said while the press corps laughed in the background.

“How are you today?” he responded

“I’m fine, how are you?” she said.

“Fantastic,” Spicer responded.

Spicer got dragged to hell on social media Tuesday after scolding Ryan for shaking her head at him because he repeatedly cut her off.

In the midst of everything going on, where the White patriarchy seems hell-bent on picking apart prominent Black women, (see Bill O’Reilly and the #BlackWomenAtWork hashtag) we just have one piece of advice for Spicer: don’t do it again.

Baltimore mega preacher, Jamal Bryant is getting called out by a woman he had a child with, LaToya Odom. According to Odom, Bryant has ignored a court order regarding child support and now she wants the pastor jailed.

Odom initially sued Bryant back in 2016, demanding he make child support payments for their son, John Karston Bryant, who was born in 2015. She also fought for custody of baby John. Bryant argued that he initially made child support payments.

However, according to him, Odom’s continued harassment made him stop the payments and he believed a judge could mediate the situation better. Bryant and Odom reached a settlement last November with Odom gaining primary physical custody of her son, while Bryant received visitation. The child support amount would not be disclosed, however Bryant had to cover Odom’s $13,500 legal bill.

Now, according to, Odom has accused Bryant of not providing her with his address for their son’s medical card and Bryant is supposedly “late time to time” on his child support payments. Odom is calling for a revised court order so Bryant can make payments on time. She also wants the 45-year-old preacher sent to jail …read more

2 Women Charge Racial Discrimination At Fox News

NEW YORK (AP) — Two black women who work at Fox News Channel have charged in a lawsuit that they were subjected to “yearslong relentless racial” hostility at the hands of a top financial executive at the network who has since been fired.

Tichaona Brown and Tabrese Wright, who sued this week in New York State Supreme Court in the Bronx, said their boss talked about her physical fear of black people, humiliated them by making them repeat words she believes blacks pronounce incorrectly and mocked the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Fox said there was no place at the network for such inappropriate remarks and fired the executive involved, Judith Slater, on Feb. 28.

The network said it was disappointed at the “needless litigation.”

Cincy Nightclub Operator Denies Lax Security Before Fatal Shooting

By DAN SEWELL Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) — A Cincinnati nightclub operator denies that some patrons were allowed to bypass security checks that included metal-detection wands before a gunbattle erupted, killing one man and injuring 16 other people.

Julian “Jay” Rodgers rejected claims that people could pay to avoid the long line to get into the club without being checked. Police estimate 200 people were inside early Sunday when a dispute escalated into a gunfight in which more than 20 shots were fired by an unknown number of shooters in the popular club near the Ohio River east of downtown Cincinnati.

“There have been untrue reports that certain patrons were allowed to enter the club without passing through security,” Rodgers, a veteran operator of Cincinnati-area entertainment venues, said in a statement late Monday. “This was not permitted.”

Rodgers said two of four privately paid uniformed Cincinnati police officers there had a clear view of security procedures and helped “with the flow of the lines.”

Police Chief Eliot Isaac has emphasized that the officers working off-duty security details remained outside before the shooting and that the club was responsible for its inside security. Isaac said he was aware of reports of a security bypass line, but police hadn’t confirmed that.

Body Cameras Capture SWAT Team’s Lethal Force Decisionmaking

By JULIET LINDERMAN, Associated Press

BALTIMORE (AP) — Body camera video captured a scene rarely made public: a Baltimore SWAT supervisor ordering an officer to kill a man holding two children hostage with a knife. While the video is jarring, the footage offers an unusual window into how officers make a difficult decision to use lethal force.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis showed the graphic footage of the recent standoff at a Baltimore rowhome to reporters Tuesday, the latest of three officer shootings recorded by body cameras since the city rolled them out last year. About 900 officers now wear the cameras daily.

The video captures a SWAT team sergeant outside the house where authorities had been unsuccessfully pleading for nearly an hour Friday for 39-year-old Reno Owens to release the 1-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl he was holding. The sergeant said the man, also clutching a 12-inch butcher knife, could kill the children at any time, and that nonlethal force wasn’t an option.

“I want you to be calm,” the sergeant tells SWAT Officer Zachary Wein. “I want you to be relaxed, and I want you to walk in there and kill this guy.”

Moments later, video shows Wein walking up the steps, exchanging a few words with …read more

Philly’s Former Top Lawyer Looking For Counsel In Corruption Case

By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia’s top prosecutor has three days to find a new lawyer in a federal bribery case against him although it’s unclear whether he has the money to pay anyone.

District Attorney Seth Williams still declined to apply for court-appointed counsel on Tuesday and promised to have new lawyers in place by Friday.

Williams is accused of taking more than $100,000 in cash, trips and gifts in exchange for help with a criminal case and a felon’s liquor license. He has acknowledged he got into financial trouble amid a divorce, despite his $175,000-a-year salary and several part-time jobs, but has pleaded not guilty.

“We had hoped that this matter was going to resolve … without indictment,” Williams said in court, apparently referring to plea negotiations that had been underway.

The city paid his lawyer during a nearly two-year FBI investigation but stopped paying once he was indicted last week, leading that lawyer to step down. A lawyer friend who accompanied him to his arraignment for free last week was told he might be in the case for good unless Williams finds a replacement.

“It’s a very significant time in our city’s history where the chief prosecutor is charged by the federal government,” …read more
