A White Louisiana Politician Defends His Tiger Woods Blackface With Bizarre Excuse

By Kiyonna Anthony

Robbie Gatti, a Louisiana politician, who dressed up as Tiger Woods by donning blackface for a community event is defending the controversial costume. He’s being blasted by residents in Bossier City, Louisiana after a photograph of him in blackface at First Baptist Church surfaced this week. However, Gatti insists that his blackface was merely part of a “good night at church.”

The Daily Mail reports the “unwavering conservative” released a statement to say he meant no harm with the ensemble, claiming the photo’s resurgence is a smear attempt by his political opponents. He wrote on Facebook, “Fifteen years ago, my church held a fall festival, where all the volunteers were told to dress as a famous person. Tiger Woods was at the height of his popularity, as a world champion, and that was who I was dressed as. Shortly after this event, I was ordained into the church.”

Gatti continued, “As a medical professional, ordained minister and military officer, I live my life seeing only character and I stand by that. I’m sad that my opponents have taken a good night at church and turned it into negative, political mud, but I’m confident the voters of …read more

By NewsOne Staff

A judge sentenced a Georgia man and woman Monday to a combined 35 years in jail after the couple terrorized African-American guests at a child’s birthday party with racial slurs and threats while riding in a truck with Confederate battle flags in 2015, reports The Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

From The Atlanta-Journal Constitution:

Superior Court Judge William McClain castigated the two, Kayla Rae Norton, 25, and Jose Ismael Torres, 26, for perpetrating what he called a hate crime.

He sentenced Torres to 20 years, with 13 to serve in prison; Norton was given 15 years, with six to serve. Upon their release, McClain ordered them to be permanently banished from Douglas County. “Their actions were motivated by racial hatred,” said McClain. Assistant District Attorney David Emadi detailed how the group [Respect The Flag] had gone on a drunken, two-county rampage in pick-up trucked laden with Confederate battle flags through Paulding and Douglas counties over July 24 and July 25. Emadi said the group threatened African-American motorists, yelled at them and walked up to one of their cars with a gun

WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s historically black colleges and universities are pushing for President Donald Trump to set aside more federal contracts and grants for their schools, and take a greater hand in their welfare by moving responsibility for a key program for those colleges to the White House.

The presidents of the nation’s 100-plus HBCUs, pressing their case for greater attention from the new Republican-controlled government, met with Trump briefly in the Oval Office and later with Vice President Mike Pence. On Tuesday, they planned to meet with GOP lawmakers.

“Know that beginning today, this administration is committed to ensuring that historically black colleges and universities get the credit and the attention they deserve,” Pence said after the meeting. “Our administration at the president’s direction is working to find new ways to expand your impact so that more students, especially in the underserved communities of this country, have a chance at a quality education.”

The college presidents, as well as the United Negro College Fund, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and other HBCU advocates, planned to express their support for migrating the White House Initiative on HBCUs from the Education Department to the White House itself.

Outside Jury Will Decide Cosby Trial

By MARYCLAIRE DALE, Associated Press

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A sequestered jury from an outside county will decide the sexual assault case against Bill Cosby, a suburban Philadelphia judge ruled Monday, rejecting a defense request to move the trial because of worldwide media reports that the actor’s lawyers say brand him a “serial rapist.”

Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill will oversee a June 5 trial over charges Cosby drugged and molested a former Temple University employee in 2004.

The judge’s ruling came after lawyers for the 79-year-old TV star argued his trial should be moved to Philadelphia or the Pittsburgh area. The larger, more diverse population would make it easier to find unbiased jurors, lawyer Brian McMonagle argued, but even then, he said, there was no guarantee Cosby could get a fair hearing.

“Unless you’ve been living under a rock, the message that has been promoted, in insidious fashion, is that Bill Cosby is guilty and that Bill Cosby is a serial rapist,” McMonagle said. “I do not believe that there’s a place anywhere in this country now where he can receive a fair trial. Not here, not anywhere. I hope I’m wrong.”

Prosecutors accused the defense of trying to shop for a jury.

17-year old My-King Johnson is making history as the first openly gay Division I football recruit. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive end has signed with his home-state’s Arizona Wildcats.

Johnson let Arizona’s defensive line coach, Vincent Amey, know he was gay from the start. According to Johnson, the coach responded, “We want you to be a Wildcat.”

However, Amey was not without reservations. He explains, “When I found out, I really couldn’t sleep…..and it wasn’t like I was uncomfortable with it. I was just like, all right, it’s different, it’s new.” However, he assured Johnson, “Look, you are who you are, I am who I am, and I’m going to coach you the same way. I’m going to treat you the same way. I’m going to get on you the same way as everybody else. There’s no difference. You do what you do.”

Johnson revealed his sexual orientation to friends and family when he was 12 years old. Raised by a teenage mother, his mom now works as a nurse in Seattle and they speak daily. Though supportive, she also continues to worry about her son saying, “It’s hard enough being a black kid in America…then …read more

An Idaho judge sentenced a high school football player to three years of probation and 300 hours of community service after prosecutors said he took part in a brutal locker room assault on a black football player.

Judge Randy Stoker is now speaking out and responding to people who feel that the sentence was too light for the perpetrator, 19-year-old John R.K. Howard. The judge accused the press (and public) for misrepresenting what happened, saying the case is not about “rape” or “sex” and that “people from the east coast have no idea what this case is about.”

Howard, who is being accused of anally penetrating a black, mentally disabled high schooler with a hanger, will skip jail time although there’s some evidence that supports the assumption that the attack was race related. Judge Stoker told The Guardian, “This is not a rape case. This is not a sex case. This started out as penetration with a foreign object. Whatever happened in that locker room was not sexual. It wasn’t appropriate. There’s nothing in this record that supports anything close to the sexual allegation against this young man.” He added that the victim “was not targeted, which …read more

‘Moonlight’ Eclipses White Liberal Shade

By Ahmad Greene-Hayes

I ‘ve seen Moonlight three times. And the movie theater was packed each time with lots of White women, which came as no real surprise; they love a good story about Black pain and triumph.

White folks are often fascinated by stories about Black folks in the ‘hood, in prison and in other cages–feel good stories about those who survive the destructive conditions of their birth. But it seems that many of them, liberals in particular, are less interested in Black stories that end in tragedy, or Black stories that are tragedy personified, or most significantly, the idea of Blackness as tragedy in the fiction of American post-racial discourse.

As I have previously written, I am wary of White liberals. Even those who have read Michelle Alexander‘s The New Jim Crow and Ta-Nehisi Coates‘s Between The World and Me, or watch Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black and Ava DuVernay‘s 13th while doing the electric slide with Tim Wise, who has been repeatedly accused of lifting words and intellectual ideas from Black activists and thinkers without proper citation.

As such, I was less concerned with the sea of White liberals that …read more

Rachel Dolezal Says She’s Struggling, Jobless and Nearly Homeless

By Jasmine Alyse

‘Black' Washington State NAACP Leader Is Really White, Parents Say

Nearly two years after she made headlines as a white woman pretending to be Black, former NAACP leader Rachel Dolezal says she is unable to find work, lives off food stamps and is close to being homeless.

Dolezal was outed in June 2015 when her parents, Larry and Ruthanne Dolezal, revealed that she was actually a white woman. The story made international headlines and Dolezal eventually admitted she was “biologically born white to white parents” but says she still identifies as Black since race is “not coded in your DNA.”

After losing her job as an adjunct instructor at Eastern Washington University, Rachel Dolezal unfortunately hasn’t been able to capitalize on the scandal. Dolezal says she’s been getting by on food stamps and loans from a friend to provide for her family, though next month she expects to be homeless.

The former professor told the Guardian she’s applied for more than 100 jobs, but no one will hire her because of the scandal. Despite changing her name on all legal documents, Dolezal is still recognized wherever she goes. The only offers on the table are for reality television and porn.

She added that her memoir “In Full Color,” which is due out in …read more

By Kellee Terrell

While #45 swears his now-defunct Muslim travel ban wasn’t a ban on Muslims, the xenophobia is still being felt in airports across the nation. Case in point, Muhammad Ali Jr. , so of the boxer/humanitarian, was recently detained by customs in Florida when returning from a trip from Jamaica.

According to the Courier Journal, Ali Jr., 44, and his mother Khalilah Camacho-Ali, the second wife of Muhammad Ali, were arriving at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Feb. 7 after returning from a speaking engagement for a Black History Month event in Montego Bay. As they went through customs, they were pulled aside because of their Arabic-sounding names, according to family friend and lawyer Chris Mancini.

Camacho-Ali was released after showing a picture of herself with her late husband Muhammad Ali, but her son didn’t have a picture of his father and was detained for further questioning. He claims that officials repeatedly asked, “Where did you get your name from?” and “Are you Muslim?”

Ali stressed that he …read more
